Malú Alvarez was born in Mexico, grew up in the United States, and has lived abroad in France and Australia. As a photo editor at Travel + Leisure from 2005 to 2008, Malú assigned photography and also contributed her own images to the magazine. Malú is a graduate of the International Center of Photography in New York City.
A fascination with print design led Malú to study graphic design in Australia after graduating from college. After spending two years in Perth and Melbourne, where she worked for the architecture and design magazine Monument, she moved to New York and began her next publishing endeavor in the photo department at Saveur magazine. Malú's love of photography began in high school. Her more recent experience shooting, producing, and editing stories in New York's publishing industry inspired her to go back to school to further her photographic practice.
Malú has a Bachelor of Arts in English literature with a minor in French language from Davidson College in North Carolina.
